Recycled Native Flooring
Recycled native flooring is sourced from old weatherboards, floor joists, or other structural timber found in both residential and commercial demolition sites around New Zealand. Kauri Warehouse machines the recycled timber into flooring - either tongue and groove (T&G) or overlay. Recycled flooring is primarily characterized by nail holes or other defects. It is impossible to say what frequency of nail holes will appear, and the photos below should be used only as an example. Below are prices for our most common recycled natives in the common sizes. Other sizes are available, call us for pricing and availability.
All prices exclude GST and are subject to change without notice.
Discounts may be available for orders with large quantities. Please contact Joe to discuss.

Recycled NZ Kauri Flooring

Railway Sleeper Flooring
Recycled sleeper flooring is available in 2 predominant colours - Reddish brown or Yellowish brown. It is characterized by its rich colouring and very obvious recycled appearance. The flooring is machined out of old railway sleepers into a 14mm overlay, with the profile being either tongue and groove or dressed-four-sides, your choice. During the machining process bolt holes are plugged and during installation cracks and other small holes are filled. Railway sleeper flooring must be laid onto a subfloor, for example concrete, plywood, or particle board .Boards are typically 200mm x 14mm T&G or D4S, and are 2.1 metres long. When ordering, please specify your preference for red or yellow sleepers. The photo on the left shows the red sleeper, as does image one and two. Image three shows the red and yellow sleeper alternating.

American Oak
American Oak is a very popular floor in North America. It is medium brown in colour with a heavy grain, and of course is well known for being very hard. We sell 2 grades of American Oak: Prime grade and Knotty. Prime grade is mostly clear with occasional knots. Knotty Oak has many large and small knots throughout. The picture on the left shows Knotty Oak.

Tongue and Groove or Overlay?
Kauri Warehouse can supply 2 styles of floorboards:
Tongue and Groove
Tongue and Groove is the method used for flooring laid over floor joists. The board is 20mm thick and the tongue and groove stops the individual boards flexing between the floor joists.
Overlay
An overlay floor is installed directly to a concrete or particleboard sub-floor and the boards are glued down directly. Traditionally a 12mm T&G board was used for overlay floors. Kauri Warehouse recommends using a 9mm thick Dressed-Four-Sides (D4S) overlay board. There are several benefits of the 9mm board:
- The 9mm D4S board should last longer than the 12mm T&G board. In future sandings a 12mm T&G board will only have 3-4mm of sanding thickness before reaching the T&G. This is not a problem with the D4S board as there is no T&G to reach, in theory you could sand almost right down to the sub-floor.
- 12mm T&G boards are very delicate. The tongues and grooves break easily.
What is Original Flooring?
Original flooring is a floor board that has been lifted from an existing floor. It has the original tongue and groove and has not been "cleaned up" in any way. Each batch of original flooring is priced individually, because each batch is in variable condition.
